Meet the Zebra Pleco (Hypancistrus zebra), also known as L046. Its bold black and white stripes make it one of the most recognizable plecos in the aquarium hobby.

🦓 A Zebra Underwater?
The Zebra Pleco is a small freshwater catfish that can reach around 7–9 cm (about 3 inches) in length.
Unlike many common plecos, it isn’t primarily an algae eater. Its natural diet includes small aquatic animals and other animal-based foods, although aquarium diets can include suitable prepared foods as well.
🌊 A Very Small Piece of the Amazon
The Zebra Pleco has an extremely limited natural range.
It is endemic to the Xingu River basin in Brazil, where it is associated with rocky habitats and flowing water.
That makes its natural habitat pretty special and also makes changes to that habitat a serious concern.
🕳️ This Fish Loves a Good Hideout
Don’t expect your Zebra Pleco to swim around the tank all day showing off its stripes.
It’s a secretive, cave-dwelling fish that often spends time among rocks and inside crevices.
Zebra Plecos are also cave spawners. During breeding, eggs are laid inside a protected cavity, where the male guards them.
So those little caves in an aquarium aren’t just decoration they can provide an important type of shelter.

The Zebra Pleco has a very restricted range and is classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Changes to the Xingu River, including the development associated with the Belo Monte hydroelectric project, have affected its habitat.
Brazil has also restricted the collection and export of wild Zebra Plecos, making responsible sourcing especially important for aquarium keepers.
The species is listed in CITES Appendix II, meaning international trade is regulated.
🐟 Is the Zebra Pleco Easy to Keep?
It’s better suited to experienced aquarists than complete beginners.
It does best with clean, well-oxygenated water, good water movement, appropriate hiding places, and a suitable diet. Because it’s naturally secretive, don’t worry if it spends plenty of time hiding.
